Quality Assurance

Barefoot Basics products are lovingly created using natural ingredients. Many of our products contain things like Aloe Vera, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus and active Honey, all known for their anti-bacterial and anti fungal properties. Our products are based on Australian recipes, which have been used on horses for many years.

The honey and beeswax used in our recipes is unpasturised and 'active' this comes from a local producer, the diet of the bees is mainly lavender which adds to the properties of the honey.

Our essential oils are sourced from a company that does not trade in untested oils, 'wild' or oils from unsustainable sources, they also play a positive role in conservation. They do not test on animals and are listed in the Naturewatch 'Compassionate Shopping Guide' as vegetarian/vegan.

As part of our environmental policy we offer a recycle/refill service for our products, please contact us for further details.

We do not use any nut oils in our products. If you would like a specific recipe made up, please contact us.

Our herbs are primarily organic and are sourced from ethical companies and sustainable resources. The herbs shown here are those that we keep in stock, please contact us if you would like a particular herb not shown as we can fulfil special orders.

Hoof Hole Filler - 40gms

Hoof Hole Filler is an excellent product for sealing holes and cracks in horses hooves. Made of beeswax and Tea Tree Oil the filler will ensure that holes can be kept clean and the anti-fungal properties of the tea tree will help to provide a bug free environment.

Usage - thoroughly clean the foot with a soap based product such as our Tea Tree soap, Borax, Chlorhexidine or soak with Sodium Hypochlorite (not recommended for shod hooves), dry. Ensure there is no debris in the hole. Take a small piece of filler (the end of a spoon or a knife is useful for this) and warm and work between your fingers. Once the filler has become pliable insert it in to the hole, working it in as much as you can. Scrape off the excess.

We recommend that the filler is removed on a weekly basis and the hole scrubbed clean before new filler is applied.

Usage - clean the affected area with either Hoof Scrub Soap or Borax or soak with Sodium Hypochlorite (not recommended for shod hooves). Dry and apply Bug Buster Cream sparingly. For deep clefts in frogs, clean as before, place some bug buster cream on either a cotton wool pad or thin stretchy crepe bandage and wipe deeply through the cleft.

  'Milton' - Sodium Hypochlorite - 1.2L

The Sodium Hypochlorite we use is supermarket own brand Milton, or baby sterilising fluid. In the UK 'Milton' is 2% strength Sodium Hypochlorite, in America and Australia 'Milton' is sold as 1% strength so ours is twice as strong. Because of this be careful with your dilution rates, using it at a very high a strength will not hurt, but it could cause the feet to become very dry.

Sodium Hypochlorite is a member of the chlorine family of bleach, household bleach is 3-6% so the baby steriliser product is gentler and does not contain any surfacants. It is anti-microbial and anti-bacterial, it is active for about 10 minutes and after this time, once it has come into contact with protein, it forms a saline solution or basically salt water. Can be made up and used as a spray, or a soak. Ideal for cases of 'the bug' and white line disease.

Usage - Spray, mix up 100ml of Sodium Hypochlorite with 400ml water in a spray bottle. Although the spray is effectively sealed, it is a good idea to only mix up a small amount of solution each time. Spray any areas of the foot that have 'the bug'. We usually give the foot a general spray following a trim.

Soak - Mix up 330ml Sodium Hypochlorite with 670ml water in a jug to give 1litre of water. This amount is enough to soak two feet. Either using soaking boots or inner tubes pour half the solution in to each boot (I have done four feet at the same time but that gets a bit manic, two feet are easier to manage!).

Wait 10 minutes then empty the solution out and add fresh solution. We recommend that the first time you soak you do three 10 minute soaks. Once you have done this, one 10 minute soak is probably enough. Please see our soaking routine on the FAQ page. Sodium Hypochlorite can be very drying so following a soak or extensive spraying apply some Bug Buster cream.

Neat - for really bad 'bug' spray neat sodium hypochlorite at one spray per second for 10 sprays.

We simply buy this from a local supermarket, you could do the same!

Magnesium Oxide (Heavy) - 450g

Heavy pharmaceutical grade magnesium oxide. Magnesium deficiency has been linked to laminitis, muscle stiffness and a depressed immune system. Magnesium is essential to all living cells. In humans magnesium is used in cases of constipation, indigestion, heartburn and as an antacid. In horses magnesium supplementation can also be useful for anxious, excitable and stressed horses.

An excess of calcium from things like calcium rich feed and pasture that has been sown for cattle, and then grazed by horses, can cause numerous problems including, laminitis, digital pulses, tight muscles, excitability and erratic behaviour.

Magnesium is typically found in many proprietary calmers, usually shown as Magnesium Oxide or Magnesium Sulphate.

In our experience Magnesium Oxide is eaten without problem, especially if mixed with a small amount of unmollassed sugar beet.

Usage - feed at a rate of 4g per 100Kg bodyweight.  If the droppings should become loose, decrease this amount until they return to normal.

We like the heavy powder as we have found it is easier to manage, the quantity in the feed bowl is physically less and requires less packaging; therefore more environmentally friendly!  The density of this product is typically 0.4g/cc.  Heavy mag ox contains less impurities than light mag ox.

In our experience we have seen the best results when feeding magnesium along side a feedstuff containing Vitamin B, such as Linseed or Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (available in our store).  Since feeding this combination our horses have been calmer, and our recovering founder pony has been pulse free.

Magnesium Oxide (Light) - 450g

Light pharmaceutical grade magnesium oxide.

Usage - feed at a rate of 4g per 100Kg bodyweight.  If the droppings should become loose, decrease this amount until they return to normal.

The density of this product is typically 0.2g/cc.  Light mag ox is a fine powder with a consistency similar to icing sugar.  Many people believe that the finer the particle size the more the magnesium is utilised within the body.

In our experience we have seen the best results when feeding magnesium along side a feedstuff containing Vitamin B, such as Linseed or Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (available in our store).  Since feeding this combination our horses have been calmer, and our recovering founder pony has been pulse free.

CalMag (Calcined Magnesium) - 950g

Cal Mag is an agricultural product that has been used for many years by farmers to prevent staggers in cows and sheep.  It is a natural source of magnesium, something that is deficient in many pastures in the UK.

Our Cal Mag has a density of around 1.2g/cc which means it is quite a gritty powder.  It can be fed at a rate of up to 4g per 100Kg bodyweight daily, if the droppings should become loose then decrease this amount until they firm up again.  In our experience we have had the best results (particularly with laminitis) when feeding a combination of Magnesium and feeds containing Vitamin B such as Linseed or Black Oil Sunflower seeds.

Cal Mag is a cost effective way of providing magnesium to your horse, ideal for those horses that are not fussy eaters.  If they do not find Cal Mag palatable we recommend either Mag Ox Light or Mag Ox Heavy which are much finer powders for a horse to cope with.

Our Cal Mag pack will last a 500Kg horse at least 47.5 days, at a cost of less than 6p per day (not including postage)
