Quality Assurance

Barefoot Basics products are lovingly created using natural ingredients. Many of our products contain things like Aloe Vera, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus and active Honey, all known for their anti-bacterial and anti fungal properties. Our products are based on Australian recipes, which have been used on horses for many years.

The honey and beeswax used in our recipes is unpasturised and 'active' this comes from a local producer, the diet of the bees is mainly lavender which adds to the properties of the honey.

Our essential oils are sourced from a company that does not trade in untested oils, 'wild' or oils from unsustainable sources, they also play a positive role in conservation. They do not test on animals and are listed in the Naturewatch 'Compassionate Shopping Guide' as vegetarian/vegan.

We do not use any nut oils in our products. If you would like a specific recipe made up, please contact us.

Our herbs are primarily organic and are sourced from ethical companies and sustainable resources. The herbs shown here are those that we keep in stock, please contact us if you would like a particular herb not shown as we can fulfil special orders.

Hoof Hole Filler - 40gms

Hoof Hole Filler is an excellent product for sealing holes and cracks in horses hooves. Made of beeswax and Tea Tree Oil the filler will ensure that holes can be kept clean and the anti-fungal properties of the tea tree will help to provide a bug free environment.

Usage - thoroughly clean the foot with a soap based product such as our Tea Tree soap, Borax, Chlorhexidine or soak with Sodium Hypochlorite (not recommended for shod hooves), dry. Ensure there is no debris in the hole. Take a small piece of filler (the end of a spoon or a knife is useful for this) and warm and work between your fingers. Once the filler has become pliable insert it in to the hole, working it in as much as you can. Scrape off the excess.

We recommend that the filler is removed on a weekly basis and the hole scrubbed clean before new filler is applied.

Magnesium Oxide (Heavy) - 450g

Heavy pharmaceutical grade magnesium oxide. Magnesium deficiency has been linked to laminitis, muscle stiffness and a depressed immune system. Magnesium is essential to all living cells. In humans magnesium is used in cases of constipation, indigestion, heartburn and as an antacid. In horses magnesium supplementation can also be useful for anxious, excitable and stressed horses.

An excess of calcium from things like calcium rich feed and pasture that has been sown for cattle, and then grazed by horses, can cause numerous problems including, laminitis, digital pulses, tight muscles, excitability and erratic behaviour.

Magnesium is typically found in many proprietary calmers, usually shown as Magnesium Oxide or Magnesium Sulphate.

In our experience Magnesium Oxide is eaten without problem, especially if mixed with a small amount of unmollassed sugar beet.

Usage - feed at a rate of 4g per 100Kg bodyweight.  If the droppings should become loose, decrease this amount until they return to normal.

We like the heavy powder as we have found it is easier to manage, the quantity in the feed bowl is physically less and requires less packaging; therefore more environmentally friendly!  The density of this product is typically 0.4g/cc.  Heavy mag ox contains less impurities than light mag ox.

In our experience we have seen the best results when feeding magnesium along side a feedstuff containing Vitamin B, such as Linseed or Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (available in our store).  Since feeding this combination our horses have been calmer, and our recovering founder pony has been pulse free.

Magnesium Oxide (Light) - 450g

Light pharmaceutical grade magnesium oxide.

Usage - feed at a rate of 4g per 100Kg bodyweight.  If the droppings should become loose, decrease this amount until they return to normal.

The density of this product is typically 0.2g/cc.  Light mag ox is a fine powder with a consistency similar to icing sugar.  Many people believe that the finer the particle size the more the magnesium is utilised within the body.

In our experience we have seen the best results when feeding magnesium along side a feedstuff containing Vitamin B, such as Linseed or Black Oil Sunflower Seeds (available in our store).  Since feeding this combination our horses have been calmer, and our recovering founder pony has been pulse free.

CalMag (Calcined Magnesium) - 950g

Cal Mag is an agricultural product that has been used for many years by farmers to prevent staggers in cows and sheep.  It is a natural source of magnesium, something that is deficient in many pastures in the UK.

Our Cal Mag has a density of around 1.2g/cc which means it is quite a gritty powder.  It can be fed at a rate of up to 4g per 100Kg bodyweight daily, if the droppings should become loose then decrease this amount until they firm up again.  In our experience we have had the best results (particularly with laminitis) when feeding a combination of Magnesium and feeds containing Vitamin B such as Linseed or Black Oil Sunflower seeds.

Cal Mag is a cost effective way of providing magnesium to your horse, ideal for those horses that are not fussy eaters.  If they do not find Cal Mag palatable we recommend either Mag Ox Light or Mag Ox Heavy which are much finer powders for a horse to cope with.

Our Cal Mag pack will last a 500Kg horse around 95 days (at 10g per day), at a cost of less than 2.5p per day (not including postage)

Linseed Lozenges - 950g

Usage - for a 500Kg horse feed one mug of linseed lozenges per feed, no more than 1 pint per day.

Equi-Sacc (Yea-Sacc) - 950g

Can help to stabilise the hindgut bacterial populations.  A healthy stable hindgut is imperative for horses to remain in good condition.  Can also help with nutrient absorption enhances the activity of fibre digesting bacteria in the hindgut and increases fibre digestibility.  Therefore, more efficient use of the vitamins and minerals derived from the forage portion of the diet is noted when the horses are maintained on Yea-Sacc (taken from the manufacturers details).

We have found Yea-Sacc 1026 useful with several of our horses, our chronic founder pony is maintaining condition and his droppings are consistent, a horse that has suffered from very watery droppings for many years now has firm normal looking droppings for the first time in ages and a horse that is a windsucker and sensitive to touch in the stomach area, seems more comfortable to be groomed.  This could all be a coincidence of course but in some cases Yea-Sacc 1026is the only thing that has changed in the diet in the last six weeks.

Manufacturers recomended dose rate:  10g per day regardless of size of horse.

Fed at a rate of 10g per day, 950g will last one horse 95 days.

Seaweed - 925g

Seaweed contains a full compliment of amino acids and minerals in a bio-available and balanced form.  Can improve coat, hooves, and skin.  We have recently started feeding seaweed (alongside Brewers Yeast) to our severely laminitic pony who we now think may be insulin resistant.  Since feeding the two items, his pulses have significantly reduced, he appears brighter in himself, his droppings are more consistent and he is generally moving a lot better.  Seaweed contains iodine which is indicated in thyroid function.  Previously addicted to salt licks since being on the seaweed he has shown no interest in them.  Pat Coleby in her book Natural Horse Care recommends seaweed is made freely available to horses, and indicates it's use for laminitics.  We now add it to all our horses feeds and they have never looked and moved better.

Seaweed is also useful for horses suffering from arthritis, colds and flu.

MSM Methylsulfonylmethane or dimethylsulfone(Distilled) - 950g

MSM is an organic form of bio-available Sulphur.  Studies have shown that MSM is effective at reducing pain and improving physical function in cases of osteoarthritis.  As well as improving joint mobility sulphur has also been shown to help muscles, joints, skin, hair and hoofs function effectively.  Many horse owners have reported improvements in conditions such as sweet itch when adding MSM to the diet.

We sell human grade distilled MSM which has been shown to be more beneficial to animals than agricultural grade or crystallised MSM which is found in many other 'joint supplements'.  Always check that the MSM that you buy is distilled.

Usage:

up to 300kg bodyweight - 15g per day for 10 days then 7.5g per day thereafter

up to 500kg bodyweight - 20g per day for 10 days then 10g per day thereafter

over 500kg bodyweight - 30g per day for 10 days then 15g per day thereafter

A 5ml teaspoon is approximately 5g of MSM.

At Barefoot Basics we only sell products that we have experience using ourselves, or that people very close to us use and that we have seen the affects over a long period of time.  We have been using MSM for the last 12 months, in that time we have seen improvements in stiffness levels in our horses, including two with quite serious bone spavins.  One of our horses tends to hang on to his winter coat and this year since feeding MSM his summer coat has come through quickly and his hoof quality has improved.

A 950g pack will last a 500kg horse 95 days at the maintenance level.

Professional Trimmers Gloves - Womens/Small Mans - Size 8

Breathable glove, as used by the professionals.

Seamless Liner - the liner is all made from one thread which ensures that there are no seams against the hands.  This increases comfort and eliminates irritation.  The knit liner allows the hands to breathe naturally eliminating perspiration on the hand.

The elasticity of the liner ensures that the glove shape fits closely to the hand allowing superb dexterity to manipulate even the smallest of items.

The liner stretches to accommodate a broader range of hand widths than traditional cotton type liner.

The new design of these gloves has enabled new former to be developed which encompasses a more natural hand shape.  This reduces fatigue and improves efficiency.  The new former shape enables a new dipping technique covering the palm and fingertip area.  This alleviates the pressure points on the knuckles and finger joint areas allowing even great flexibility.
