Peter Laidely - Two day dissection clinic on 22nd and 23rd September 2007 (Saturday and Sunday)

The clinic will take place in a science lab and will be run under scientific conditions.

Over the two day course we will be covering the theory, and understanding the physiology, of all connective tissues that form the distal equine limb.  We will focus our dissection on identifying structure and interrelationships of the bones, the hoof capsule and the major locomotor tendons and ligaments of the three distal articulation joints.  This will include defining and demonstrating the distal suspensory system and the suspensory structures of the proximal (fetlock) and distal (navicular) sesamoid bones.

Apart from the practical work we will do four theory sessions, approximately one hour each morning and afternoon, to explain basic biochemistry, basic biomechanics and the structure and function of the equine foot.

Each attendee will be expected to have or purchase their own dissection kit and each attendee or team of two attendees will present their work to the group.

All of the finished specimens will be photographed and a CD of the photos of the complete workshop will be provided to each attendee.  We will demonstrate cleaning and preserving one set of hard tissue specimens (hoof capsule and bone) and each attendee will be able to keep their own specimens if they wish to clean and preserve them.

Cost £250 for the two day course, including materials, lunch and refreshments.

Friday 21st september 2007 - Introduction To Hoof Care

How the hoof functions in it's natural state and what effect shoes can have on the hoof, and the rest of the horses body. Peter uses a combination of audio visual presentations and props to demonstrate the function of the hoof. There are two trimming demonstrations where the group analyses the demo horse and discusses problem areas, then Peter trims and explains what he is doing.

This day is an ideal introduction for owners of barefoot horses that wish to find out more about it, or for people that are interested in taking their horses barefoot.

For more experienced owners there is the opportunity to bring your own horse to trim under Peter's supervision.

Cost £75 including lunch and refreshments.

Peter Laidely - Hoofworks Australia

Evening Lecture - Mortimer West End Village Hall, RG7 2HU
Friday 1st June 7.30pm – 9.30pm

Cost: £5.00

Three Day Hands On Clinic - Kingsbridge Farm, Swallowfield, RG7 1JE

Day One
Friday 1st June 9.00am – 5.30pm

Day One - anatomy and physiology .

Day Two
Saturday 2nd June 9.00am – 5.30pm

Day Two - hands on trimming . Following on from the theory learnt on day one, Peter explains safe tool handling techniques and the trim, then the group gets to trim cadaver hooves. Working in small groups each team analyses their hoof, decides how it should be trimmed and trims it. The hoof is then dissected on a band saw and presented to the rest of the group. Dissecting the hoof after it has been trimmed allows you to see how accurate you were with your trim and if it could have been done better. Depending on time Peter does a hoof and leg dissection so you can put day one's theory into 3D.

Day Three
Sunday 3rd June 9.00am – 5.30pm

Day Three – problem hoof day . Open for people that have done days one and two, or have had previous trimming experience. This day is predominately hands on looking at hoofs with more serious problems like navicular and laminitis. There will be a trimming demonstration on a recovering laminitic pony. There will also be a dissection of a laminitic hoof to see what effect the laminitis has had on the internal structure of the hoof.

Nb. Days can be booked independently of each other however you must have attended days one and two to attend day three, or have previously attended a course with Peter, or have previous trimming experience.

Cost: £75 per day - refreshments and lunch provided on each day.
